Dietetic services for mental health

At Hunter Clinical Services, we understand mental health and nutrition. The impact of mental health on eating habits can be profound, with conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression often leading to disordered eating patterns. These can include emotional eating, appetite changes, or restrictive eating behaviours, which in turn can affect overall well-being and nutritional balance.

Our experienced mental health dietitians offer holistic support and meet you where you are. We recognise that mental health issues can influence your diet, leading to difficulties such as:

  • Emotional Eating: Using food as a coping mechanism during times of stress.
  • Appetite Changes: Experiencing significant fluctuations in appetite or food intake due to mood.
  • Disordered Eating Patterns: Developing unhealthy eating habits such as binge eating, restrictive eating, or irregular meal patterns.
  • Nutritional Deficiencies: Inadequate intake of essential nutrients due to poor eating habits, impacting mood and cognitive function.

Our personalised dietary therapy addresses these challenges by promoting balanced nutrition that supports mental and emotional health. We focus on making nutrition simple and providing nutrients to enhance brain function, stabilise mood, and foster a positive relationship with food.

Discover how our dietetic services can support your mental health and help you achieve a balanced, nourishing diet that contributes to overall well-being and ability to be your authentic self.

Fees, rebates and funding pathways

Private clients

If you prefer to access sessions privately, no referral is required. You are welcome to contact us directly to make a booking. However, please note that private clients are not eligible for any rebates on session fees.

Medicare rebates – mental health

With a valid referral from your general practitioner, pediatrician, or psychiatrist, you can access mental health support under a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). This referral allows access to:

  • Up to 10 sessions over a 12 month period with an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker or Psychologist.

Medicare rebates – eating disorder

With a valid referral from your general practitioner, pediatrician, or psychiatrist, individuals with an eating disorder can access support under the eating disorder treatment pathway (EDTP). This referral allows access to:

  • Up to 20 sessions over a 12-month period with an Accredited Practicing Deititian with a medicare rebate.
  • Up to 40 sessions with an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker or Psychologist within the same period with a medicare rebate.

Criteria for EDTP eligibility

There are specific criteria that must be met to qualify for an EDTP referral. Please consult with your GP to determine if you are eligible for this pathway.

Out-of-pocket expenses

Medicare rebates do not cover the full cost of your appointment. You will be required to pay the full session fee upfront, and Medicare will issue a partial rebate afterward. The exact out-of-pocket expense depends on the fee structure of the practitioner you book with.

Medicare rebate amounts

  • Accredited Mental Health Social Worker / Psychology Session: With a valid MHCP or EDTP referral, you will receive a rebate for each session. The amount differs depending which therapist you are seeing.
  • Dietetic Session: With a valid EPC or EDTP referral, a rebate is provided for each session.

Once you reach the Medicare Threshold for the year, the rebate increases to 85% of the consultation fee.

Claiming Your Medicare rebate

We can submit Medicare claims on your behalf online. Typically, the rebate will be deposited into your bank account within 2 business days.

Private health insurance

If you have private health insurance, your fund may also offer a rebate towards the cost of sessions.  Please speak to your fund about your individual cover and rebates offered.
