Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) offers a unique approach to healing trauma that doesn’t require you to extensively talk through the details of past distressing experiences.

EMDR was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro and has been widely recognised for its effectiveness in treating PTSD other trauma-related conditions.

How EMDR Therapy Differs:

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) offers a unique approach to healing trauma that doesn’t require extensively talking through the details of past distressing experiences.

Methods of Bilateral Stimulation

Our EMDR therapists use several techniques to induce bilateral stimulation, including:

  • Eye Movements: Following your therapist’s fingers moving back and forth across your field of vision. This technique is thought to mimic the rapid eye movements that occur during REM sleep, facilitating memory processing.
  • Tactile Stimulation: Guiding you to use alternating tapping on your shoulders or knees. This method is useful for individuals who may find eye movements uncomfortable or challenging.
  • Auditory Tones: Wearing headphones through which you hear alternating tones in each ear. This auditory stimulation helps you engage both hemispheres of the brain, similar to the other methods.

Key Features of EMDR Therapy

  • Focused Processing: EMDR allows you to focus on the emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs associated with traumatic memories, rather than retelling your story in detail. This can be particularly beneficial if you find it challenging to verbalise your experiences.
  • Accelerated Healing: By targeting the way memories are stored and processed in the brain, EMDR can lead to significant symptom reduction and emotional healing in a relatively shorter time-frame compared to other psychological approaches.
  • Client-Centered Approach: Our EMDR therapists respect your individual pace and readiness to engage with traumatic memories. We guide the process while ensuring the you feel safe and supported throughout each session.

Benefits of EMDR Therapy:

  • Minimised Re-traumatisation: EMDR therapy allows you to process traumatic memories without having to verbally relive the details, reducing the risk of re-traumatisation.
  • Accessibility: EMDR is accessible if you struggle with verbal expression or have difficulty articulating your emotions.
  • Holistic Healing: In addition to reducing symptoms, EMDR aims to promote overall emotional resilience and well-being by addressing the root causes of distress.
