Constipation
Constipation in children is a common issue that can cause discomfort and distress. It often arises from factors like a low-fibre diet, inadequate fluid intake, lack of physical activity, or stress. Signs include infrequent bowel movements, hard stools, abdominal pain, and irritability.
Children with sensory concerns may avoid using the toilet due to discomfort with bowel movements or the bathroom environment, which can worsen the issue. Chronic constipation can impact their quality of life, leading to pain, reluctance to use the toilet, and complications like stool impaction.
A dietitian can help by assessing dietary habits and providing tailored recommendations to increase fibre intake and hydration. They can suggest practical ways to incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, as well as strategies to create a more positive toilet experience. With the right support, constipation can often be effectively managed, helping your child feel more comfortable and healthy.
